Dawei—The Myanmar military junta launched an airstrike on a village in the Taung Pyauk area of Dawei this morning, just 48 hours before the regime’s scheduled election.
The strike targeted the Taung Pyauk region of Thayetchaung Township, a resistance stronghold located east of the Dawei-Myeik Highway that comprises approximately ten villages. Local sources reported that the attack was carried out by a jet fighter originating from the Myeik airbase.
“We are still verifying whether the ordnance used was a 200-pound or 500-pound bomb,” said a member of the local revolutionary forces. “We have received reports of casualties and injuries, but we are still assessing the impact.”
Preliminary inquiries suggest that at least two to four people were injured in the blast, though no fatalities have been confirmed so far.
Military analysts and local residents believe the timing of the strike is significant. With the junta’s election date approaching, the airstrike is viewed as an attempt to exert military pressure on PDF battalions and destabilize resistance-held territories.
A local woman from the area confirmed hearing reports of casualties following the bombing, but noted that the exact number of victims and the extent of the damage remain unclear due to security conditions on the ground.
The junta has scheduled the first phase of the election for December 28, 2025, in four townships within the Tanintharyi Region: Dawei, Myeik, Bokpyin, and Kawthaung.
