Mawtaung Town, a strategic settlement located on the Thai-Myanmar border, was captured and seized by resistance forces this morning, marking the first town seizure ever recorded in Tanintharyi Region.
Fierce fighting between the resistance forces and the military junta’s troops began on November 11, culminating in the complete capture of Mawtaung Town on the fourth day of the offensive.
The Commander of the National Unity Government’s (NUG) Tanintharyi Region Military Command confirmed that all military junta camps in Mawtaung Town have been seized. Although the military junta has been attempting to advance a large force to retake the border road since December 2024, the resistance forces now totally control both the trading route and the border town.
During the battle, the military junta’s troops launched intense aerial bombing attacks and frequently shelled the area with heavy artillery. From November 12 to November 14, the military junta attacked day and night with jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft, dropping hundreds of bombs.
A displaced person who witnessed the event stated that approximately 20 military junta soldiers fled with their weapons and were seen surrendering them to Thai soldiers at around 3:00 AM on November 14.
According to resistance fighters, around 11:00 AM today, approximately 50 personnel—including military junta soldiers, Pyu Saw Htee militia members, and police—were seen being relocated to Prachuap Khiri Khan Town in Thailand after coming down from the base of the hill in Mawtaung.
Pro-military lobbyists posted on social media that key sites, including the Immigration Office (Lwa Ka Yone), the main police station, and an outpost in Mawtaung Town, were lost, and 19 military junta soldiers fled to the Thai side with their weapons.
Earlier this morning, around 8:00 AM, some military junta soldiers, Pyu Saw Htee members, and police in Mawtaung Town raised a white flag and surrendered to the resistance forces.
All town residents have fled and are in urgent need of food supplies and shelter.
